Deep Two-phase, Hemispherical Magma Oceans on Lava Planets

چکیده
Abstract Astronomers have discovered a handful of exoplanets with rocky bulk compositions but orbiting that orbit so close to their host star the surface planet must be at least partially molten. It is expected dayside such “lava planets” harbors rock-vapor atmosphere flows quickly toward airless nightside—this partial critical interpretation lava observations, transports negligible heat nightside. As result, temperature magma ocean may range from 3000 K near substellar point down 1500 day–night terminator. We use simple models incorporating thermodynamics and geochemistry melt predict physical chemical properties as function distance point. Our principal findings are that: (1) much deeper than previously thought, probably extending core–mantle boundary below an Earth-sized planet; (2) only molten, leading gradients in chemistry ocean; (3) base silicate mantle important temperature. In most extreme cases, interiors could cold enough thermal stratification gravitationally stable. These implications for dynamics ocean, well composition atmosphere.

Magma Oceans in the Inner Solar System
Theory and observations point to the occurrence of magma ponds or oceans in the early evolution of terrestrial planets and in many early-accreting planetesimals. The apparent ubiquity of melting during giant accretionary impacts suggests that silicate and metallic material may be processed through multiplemagma oceans before reaching solidity in a planet. The processes of magma ocean formation ...
متن کاملDeep jets on gas-giant planets
Three-dimensional numerical simulations of the atmospheric flow on giant planets using the primitive equations show that shallow thermal forcing confined to pressures near the cloud tops can produce deep zonal winds from the tropopause all the way down to the bottom of the atmosphere. These deep winds can attain speeds comparable to the zonal jet speeds within the shallow, forced layer; they ar...

متن کاملControl of magma flow in dykes on cyclic lava dome extrusion
[1] Lava dome eruptions are commonly characterized by large fluctuations in discharge rate with cyclic behaviour on time-scales ranging from hours to decades. Examples include Bezymianny volcano (Russia), Merapi (Java), Santiaguito (Guatemala), Mt St Helens (USA), Mt Unzen (Japan), and Soufrière Hills volcano (Montserrat). Previous models have assumed simple cylindrical conduits for magma trans...
